Does Your Child Really Need Braces?

Braces and other orthodontic treatments extend beyond primary oral health and hygiene to aid in the establishment of proper jaw alignment and function. Teeth that are properly aligned are easier to clean, which reduces the risk of gum infections, tooth decay, and other dental conditions. A good bite is also necessary for speech development and chewing. Dental conditions are a prevalent issue among young kids hence the need for child braces.

Jaw and teeth misalignment issues among kids are relatively common and can be caused by a variety of factors.

Some are inherited, while others are caused by childhood habits, accidents, and dental diseases. You may notice anomalies yourself, or your child’s dentist may refer you to an orthodontist for a second opinion. Regardless of how and when you see an issue, only an orthodontist or a dentist can determine whether or not your child requires braces.

According to the American Association of Orthodontics (AAO), your child should see an orthodontist before they turn seven. However, certain conditions involving jaw growth or tooth eruption may necessitate a visit as early as age five or six. Although treatment may not start this early, a preventative intervention can assist you and your children’s orthodontist in developing a future plan.
